Foxborough. MA – April 4, 2011 – ICONICS, a Microsoft® Gold Certified Partner of the Year and provider of Web-enabled, industrial visualization software for Microsoft Windows® operating systems, announced they are a member of the PLANTCockpit research consortium. The Production Logistics and Sustainability Cockpit (PLANTCockpit) proposes a central environment for the monitoring and controlling of all intra-logistical processes. Research results of the PLANTCockpit project aims to provide production supervisors, foremen and line managers with the required visibility to make well-informed decisions for optimization of plant processes.
The PLANTCockpit research project is centered around incorporating existing ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems, as well as MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and special-purpose solutions. They provide the integration of visibility and process needed to be able to identify potential, then optimize, intra-logistics processes with respect to yield, quality, energy consumption and other indicators.
PLANTCockpit plans to provide a model for integrating heterogeneous shop floor management systems, including enterprise resource planning, condition-based maintenance, energy management and other special purpose systems. With HMI/SCADA, MES, ISA 95 and OPC Unified Architecture all part of the initial research project scope, having ICONICS as one of the 12 organization consortium is a natural fit.
“ICONICS is excited to be working with leading organizations and universities on the PLANTCockpit research project,” states Russ Agrusa, ICONICS President and CEO. “Our expertise in providing cutting edge visualization software for automation will be utilized in this project.”
The PLANTCockpit research project is co-funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme and it takes 36 months. The project is led by SAP AG. It includes 12 consortia partner organizations and started in September 2010 having 3 main research objectives:
• Visibility and integration across all manufacturing processes, layers and systems
• Optimized production and logistics processes
• Increased energy efficiency and reduced waste production
The PLANTCockpit research consortium consists of a group of highly qualified industrial and academic research organizations that has specifically affiliated to meet the challenges of the proposed research project. This is achieved by a mixture of two technology partners and five industry application partners, as well as four universities and one research center. The industry application partners provide real-world environment and evaluation opportunities and represent different industry segments from the discrete industry such as automotive, semiconductors, industrial engineering and, from the process industry, the beverage industry. One of the technology partners conforms to the European Commission’s definition of an SME, plus belongs to one of the new member states of the EU. Geographically, the consortium is distributed across seven countries, namely the EU member states: Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands and Spain, as well as the associated country Switzerland. Research partners include SAP AG, Acciona S.A., BMW AG, Comau SPA, Doehler Holland B.V., Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, ICONICS Europe B.V., INTEL, Politecnico di Milano, TU Dresden,Tampere University of Technology and Tecnalia.
