What is OPC UA and how does it affect your world?

from Plant Engineering - May 2008 - OPC-UA is an important building block that enables users to build the next generation of software automation solutions. With complete backward compatibility ensured, vendors will have much to gain - and nothing to lose - by adopting the new OPC Unified Architecture. Over the past decade, software vendors have used Object Oriented Architectures and Service Oriented Architecture to design products that are both scalable and reliable. Surprisingly, these successful architectural models have rarely been used to exchange information throughout the factory floor. The delay in the adoption of these technologies is mostly because automatic applications were lagging behind, and were designed to process simple row information, rather than to consume and transform complex information. The information carried within an object is far richer than the information carried with simple row data. In a typical automation application, you rarely wish to analyze single, isolated row data. It's far more interesting to analyze the data in terms of its relationship with other data - and in terms of the operation that can be performed.

Blending Plant Operations with Enterprise Management

from Automation World - May 2008 - The war between plant operations and IT is over. Here's a look at the major trends in information technology that are having a direct and growing impact on plant operations. Golf club and golf ball manufacturer Callaway Golf Co., in Carlsbad, Calif., wanted to develop the flexibility to introduce seven to eight new products annually. This meant tight coordination between design teams, marketing and plant engineering. This also meant sharing information with partners in China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Mexico. The teams needed to share large files of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software. To ensure that programs could be exchanged effectively, the company adopted Teamcenter Community Collaboration, a product lifecycle management (PLM) solution from Siemens PLM Software, a Plano, Texas-based unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division. The content management tools in the PLM solution, combined with Microsoft SharePoint collaboration tools, let Callaway control changes made to product content by providing document and version histories and e-mail alerts.

Is Your Automation System Up to Date?

from Prime Partner Guide - May 2008 - Windows Vista provided us everything that we could dream of for developing new visually-compelling applications that deliver unprecedented user experiences. The last couple of years have seen significant advances in technology: the development of 64-bit processors, the launch of Windows Vista, application platform .NET 3.0 and Windows Server 2008. Thanks to the work of Microsoft and its new 64-bit operating system, Windows Vista, software developers are releasing new applications, which can now take full advantage of the advancements made by Intel and AMD. 64-bit technology has several benefits and has become the mainstream processor, even amongst consumers. The support for vastly greater physical memory and virtual memory space enables scenarios that were not possible with 32-bit. New features in the 64-bit processors offer better security and protection and the unprecedented compatibility with existing 32-bit applications has allowed for a controlled transition to the superior processor.

Heathrow Terminal 5

from Prime Partner Guide - 2008 - London's Heathrow Airport opened the doors to Terminal 5 (T5) in March 2008. Phase I added Terminals 5A and 5B. Phase 2, which adds Terminal 5C, is set to open in 2010. Built at a cost of £4.3bn, the new terminal has offered the airport operator BAA the opportunity to redefine the passenger experience with the first new gateway at Heathrow since Terminal 4 opened in 1986. T5 has the capacity for more than 30 million passengers a year and comprises a 4,000-space car park, transport links, and two satellite terminals. Passengers are transported to the satellite terminals via an underground tracked transit system. The terminal has a small footprint compared to the conventional modern terminal buildings, which poses particular architectural and structural challenges. It is constructed on a series of levels and will have the highest number of lifts of any building in the northern hemisphere, as well as one of Europe's longest escalator drops. ICONICS was invited by Ultra Electronic Airport Systems, a first tier supplier for the building systems integration (BSI) at T5, along with the BAA Systems Team, to participate in the process of product evaluation, resulting in the selection of GENESIS32 as the chosen product for this challenging project.

ICONICS looks forward, but keeps an eye on the past

from Plant Engineering - May 2008 - Even if you overlook the cool factor of the 3-D plant floor imaging capabilities of the ICONICS GENESIS64 system, you still have the ability to connect your plant floor and enterprise systems in a seamless, Web-based package. When ICONICS president Russ Agrusa showed off GENESIS64 at the company's user group event in Boston in April, he provided both some gee-whiz visuals and some practical knowledge for what plant managers and manufacturing executives face in a receding economy.

"There are big pressures on the plant floor,"said Agrusa. "Studies show 79% of manufacturers need to reduce operating costs.

Five Fast Things

from Plant Engineering Live - April 10, 2008 - But while in Boston... I spent some time at the ICONICS customer event, and company officials were agog with their data visualization software, GENESIS64. The 64-bit processing technology allows ICONICS software to mesh with the new Microsoft operating systems and provide 3-D visualization of plant floor operations, tying the enterprise and plant floor operations together seamlessly. Perhaps it meant without saying, but ICONICS president and CEO Russ Agrusa made a point of stating that ICONICS would continue to not just support its popular 32-bit technology, but continue R&D to enhance and develop it further. That's good news for those on legacy systems who want the technology without having to change operating systems. There's a huge cool factor to the 3-D imaging, though.

Sound OFF! Editors' Blog: ICONICS 2008 Worldwide Customer Summit

from www.controlglobal.com - April 8, 2008 - ...our intrepid reporter, Paul Miller... takes a deep dive into the ICONICS/Microsoft partnership... Today's program began with a morning general session that focused on why ICONICS is embracing 64-bit technology, the goodness of Microsoft Vista, the depth of the ICONICS-Microsoft relationship and more details on the newly launched GENESIS64 platform. ICONICS is heralding GENESIS64 as the next generation of automation software technology, and as far as I can determine, this is probably not an overstatement. Founder, President and CEO Russ Agrusa, kicked off today's general session with a presentation entitled, Scalable Software for Real-Time Visual Intelligence. That scalable software, of course, is GENESIS64. Agrusa presented some the results of an ICONICS user survey that indicated that safety is the biggest driver for implementing applications for plant floor visibility, followed by improved asset reliability. The survey also indicated that plant operators and maintenance staffs are the two most influential organizations in a manufacturing plant, but the relative influence of plant IT departments is increasing. It's nice when some hard data becomes available to support our common sense assumptions.

Sound OFF! Editors' Blog: ICONICS 2008 Worldwide Customer Summit

from www.controlglobal.com - April 8, 2008 - Control contributing editor Paul Miller reports from the ICONICS Worldwide Customer Summit 2008 in Boston... It's finally a beautiful sunny, if cool and breezy day here in Boston, where at Walt's request, I'm mostly indoors covering the ICONICS Worldwide Customer Summit at the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center, located right on Boston Harbor. And yes, we're not actually very far at all from the historic Boston Tea Party site... Back in the early 70s, when I was a college student here in Boston, this waterfront section of South Boston was mostly made up of run-down fish piers, with a few good seafood restaurants sprinkled here and there. Of these, the world-famous Anthony's Pier 4 still remains. What used to be the gritty Northern Avenue area has now been gentrified into Seaport Boulevard, the better to draw conventioneers and the odd tourist or so to a new convention center and associated hotels. Many of Control's readers should be familiar with ICONICS, a PC-based automation software company that has been around for quite a number of years. Russ Agrusa, ICONICS' personable president and CEO, founded the company way back in 1986, which by a minor coincidence, happens to be the same year that I became associated with the industrial automation industry.

Tech Update: Process Control

from Food Engineering - January 2008 - Advanced control solutions enable processors to satisfy regulatory demands while gaining a competitive edge. Last year was full of all sorts of bad news from the FDA: product recalls due to E. coli, Salmonella and other nasty pathogens; problems with allergen contaminations; and labels that failed to list potential allergens, missed some ingredients altogether or promised certain levels of vitamins or minerals that simply weren't up to the level specified on the label. While these problems screamed for attention, consumers continued to demand more creative, tantalizing foods and drinks. Food engineers had to meet these challenges with fewer resources, while tracking the ingredients used, the processing steps taken and the customers who ordered the products. Meeting these demands by manually recording data from various "islands of automation" is becoming more and more difficult. As governing bodies increase the information they want and decrease the time allotted to procure it, manual methods will no longer cut it. It's time to start thinking about plant-wide advanced process control.

64-bit Computing

from Control Engineering Europe - November/December 2007 - Last year about this time many of us were reading reviews about Microsoft's new Vista operating system, which was finally released to the public at the end of January, 2007. Many of the early reviewers were clearly not excited. The software was two years overdue, they said, and it consumed much more PC resources than Windows XP. Several major innovations, such as a new file system, were dropped because they were taking too much time to develop. There were some positive comments about the new visual style, called Windows Aero, but was this enough to go out and buy the new software? You'd probably need a new PC to run it, anyway. As we see now, Vista is really a technology-based release, with many improvements related to how the system functions and therefore more visible to software developers instead of end-users. For example, one of Microsoft's primary objectives was to improve the state of security in the operating system, and it appears to have achieved this very well.
