Introduction
Greek motorway operator Attiki Odos needed a way to monitor and control electro-mechanical equipment throughout the length of its 60km highway, both to ensure that emergency equipment remained operational, and to control safety in real time, for example by preventing levels of dangerous gases building up in tunnels.

The company chose the Microsoft-based ICONICS GENESIS32 HMI/SCADA suite, which now runs on severs providing for real-time control and monitoring of over 25,000 points along the motorway.

Now, safety and technical personnel are alerted by alarms that can respond within two seconds to events and issues, and have been able to improve their response time to safety issues by 25%, helping to ensure a safer motorway.

Challenge
Attiki Odos Motorway is a high speed toll motorway that consists of two main highways: the Elefsina Stavros Spata A/P motorway (52.4km) and the Imittos Western Peripheral motorway (12.9km). It offers three traffic lanes in both directions, one emergency lane, 32 multi-level interchanges and literally hundreds of overpasses and underpasses.

It is staffed with specially trained emergency units, including Intervention and Maintenance Patrol Units, which patrol the motorway with modern vehicles around the clock - with the aim of providing users of the motorway with high quality service.

However, motorway operator Attiki Odos SA needed a way to monitor and control a vast range of safety and emergency equipment along the entire length of the motorway, both to be alerted of any malfunction in safety equipment, and to ensure effective operation of safety systems, such as ventilation equipment that maintains air quality in tunnels.

Solutions
Attiki Odos chose the GENESIS32 HMI/SCADA suite running under the Microsoft Windows operating system, along with the Microsoft SQL Server database application, and Microsoft Windows 2000.

The ICONICS AlarmWorX32 application was chosen to provide real-time notification of issues arising on the motorway that require attention. Using ICONICS ToolWorX32, partner Algosystems developed the application to interface to the controllers. In total, the servers running the ICONICS solution interface with over 25,000 monitoring and control points.

Systems running the GENESIS32 solution are now responsible for monitoring and control of all electromechanical systems on the highway and in the tunnels - including fire hose panels, irrigation pumps, power distribution equipment, uninterruptible power supplies and diesel generators - from a central location.

Benefits
With a response time of under two seconds, the real-time monitoring systems allow personnel to respond quickly to safety issues on the motorway. Response time by safety and technical personnel has been reduced by 25%, leading to higher safety standards for users of the motorway.

Furthermore, control systems monitor tunnel ventilation, and automatically provide additional exterior airflow as necessary, to keep the tunnels clear of carbon dioxide, smoke and nitrogen oxide. They also control tunnel lighting, helping to ensure safety by providing lighting levels that are appropriate to the amount of external daylight.
